CHALLENGE

-

Chem is a small batch roaster based in NY. The owner began roasting for his own enjoyment. He wanted to start his own roaster to sell to friends and clients as he traveled for work.

Playing with chemistry sketches, the periodic table and scientific images we looked for a way to communicate the precise nature of a scientific, good, quality roast.

We were inspired by turn-of-the-century pharmaceutical labels and old world science illustrations.

SOLUTION

-

I developed an identity to play on the process of roasting coffee and the chemical reactions that take place. We came up with a vintage science aesthetic that was simple and clean.

They needed a way to print short run bags and the ability to change up roasts and batches frequently. We printed a standard bag and then made stamps for roast names.
